If you want to learn to make perfect White Rice in your Rice Cooker, my friend, you’re at the right place, cause I’m Asian and I can cook rice with my eyes closed. Rice cookers are a must-have for Asian households because we eat so much rice and sometimes rice for all three meals. And being a food blogger, I have over 10 varieties of rice in my rice cupboard including Basmati, Jasmine, Brown Rice, long grain white rice, and even purple rice. I cook all these rice varieties in my rice cooker and they all come out absolutely perfect, all the time.

Rice Cooker I use

We are a two person family and we eat freshly cooked rice for almost all our meals. So I use this 1.2 QT aroma rice cooker with stainless steel inner pot. This rice cooker can cook 1 standard cup of uncooked rice (equal to 1 1/4 cup rice cooker cups that come with the rice cooker). 1 cup uncooked rice yields about 3 cups of cooked rice. This is enough for 2 – 4 servings.

For larger batches, I use my 6 QT instant pot. If you use an instant pot, use the ratio of 1 cup rice: 1 cup water ratio.

Why wash your rice?

I always wash my rice. One, I don’t want my ancestors to come and scold me in my dreams. Two it helps you to get non-sticky, non-starchy perfectly glossy rice grains.

Washing rice removes excess starches that are covering rice grains. If you cook without washing this starch, they become gummy and mushy when they are cooked. Resulting in sticky mushy unappetizing rice.

Sometimes rice comes enriched. Which means rice manufacturers add some other nutrients to the rice. In this case, you can skip washing rice and use 1 cup rice: 1.5 cup water ratio or use the instructions on the package.

Perfect Water Ratio for White Rice

We Asians love using the one-knuckle measuring method when it comes to measuring water for our rice. That works when you use more than half the capacity of your rice cooker pot. But when you cook a small batch of rice in a larger rice cooker pot, I don’t like to admit it but, the traditional method doesn’t really work. The foolproof way to get the perfect white rice in your rice cooker, no matter how many cups of rice you cook, is to follow the correct water ratio.

For white rice, I use 1 cup washed rice: 1 1/4 cups water ratio. When you wash your rice, it absorbs some of the water. I know many of the US brands suggest 1 cup rice: 2 cup water ratio. This works if you cook rice without washing and on a stovetop. But if you use this ratio in a rice cooker, you’re going to end up with overcooked mushy rice.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add rice into the removable inner pot of the rice cooker. Wash rice about 3 times until the water is less cloudy and not milky anymore.

It's not necessary to wash rice until water runs clear. This makes the rice absorb too much water and break.
  2. Drain water completely.

  3. Add water and salt (1 cup rice : 1 1/4 cup water ratio). Cover with the lid and turn the "cook" switch on. (Or the button to cook rice in your rice cooker)

  4. When the rice is cooked and the cooker switches to "warm" mode, turn off the rice cooker from the plug. Let it sit for 10 minutes without touching so the excess moisture absorbs into rice grains and also the grains firm up. Fluff the rice with a spoon. Serve warm.

Leave the rice on "Warm" mode for too long can dry the rice grains. I also notice the bottom layer of the rice grains stick to the pot or become crispy
